About
Brúarskóli  Founded in 2003, Brúarskóli is a special education school in Reykjavík that serves children from the Greater Reykjavík Area facing serious mental health, behavioral, or social challenges. Brúarskóli operates four locations, with its main campus in Vesturhlíð. As a temporary placement, Brúarskóli aims to equip students with the skills they need to succeed back at their home school.

Staff tailor instruction to each student's individual interests and abilities, while also strengthening social and communication skills and teaching emotional regulation.

Enrollment fluctuates throughout the academic year and from year to year. The team at Brúarskóli includes administrators, teachers, a consulting developmental therapist, behavior specialists, and learning support assistants.  

Nationwide, the school consults on individual student cases and provides education and hands-on training regarding challenging behavior.

Application for upper primary school placement for up to 16 weeks: The school offers placements of up to 16 weeks for students at the adolescent level. 

During this period, participation at the home school depends on individual circumstances and the team's assessment.

Brúarskóli supports the adjustment process as students return to their home school.

Application for a Brúarskóli emergency placement for up to four weeks: 

A home school may apply for an emergency placement when a serious incident or other circumstances require a child to receive a temporary four-week placement at Brúarskóli.

Apply here. Education and hands-on instruction through Brúarskóli — Brúarskóli provides theoretical training on challenging
behavior for all staff in mainstream primary schools. 

We also offer hands-on training courses conducted in accordance with Article 13 of the regulation on the responsibilities and duties of primary school staff.

Consultation on individual student cases in primary schools nationwide Brúarskóli plays an advisory role for mainstream primary schools throughout the country. 

Schools can apply for consultation and receive support services from Brúarskóli for students with behavioral
challenges. Priority is given to grades 1-3 in Reykjavík.Apply for consultation here.
